不得不说K3NT在这个系列的混音总是透着良好的音乐性，文化底蕴十足，并且总是能带来惊喜，让人眼前一亮。在这个音乐多到让人耳软、只看企划包装就有人会打9分10分的年代里，真不知道还有多少好的音乐人还被浮尘埋没着。没办法，音乐这东西就是这样，虽然有这样那样的主观因素在里面，用心了就是用心了，听过就能真实的感觉到，其他一切解释都无疑是扯淡。
这一次终于露出本来面目，铺出了一大串箱底好货，骨子里的Funk Disco味道完全是自然流露，同时又有很稳定的音乐控制力，无论是车载还是沙发，抑或是家中小趴，都足以让人抖腿抖到根本停不下来！
先看下曲目能找到很多熟悉的名字，无论大师级的James Brown，资深音乐制作人Les Loups，Todd Terje，再到Funk大师Rinocerose，最后用著名乐队Cut Copy还以颜色，这就已经读到相当的精彩了。
我想说，可以循环的音乐才是好音乐。作者再一次向听众展示了电子音乐是可以雅俗共赏的，是可以不是神经病音乐的，也是可以不用装逼的。

Early on in her still relatively nascent career, Canadian vocalist Diana Panton had the great fortune, and good sense, to align herself with two outstanding jazz countrymen, multi-instrumentalist Don Thompson and guitarist Reg Schwager. It was Thompson who encouraged her to study at the Banff Centre, where her instructors included Norma Winstone, Sheila Jordan and Jay Clayton. Jordan has since likened Panton’s voice to “the sweetest bird you’ll ever hear.” Thompson and Schwager have been guiding forces on all her albums, including this, her fourth. Also onboard, alternating rudders to this sleek schooner, are Brazilian drummers and percussionists Maninho Costa and Silas Silva.
Panton does, indeed, have a delightfully sweet (though never cloying) sound, a tonal purity that is arrestingly beautiful. She is also a skilled linguist—her day job is teaching French—making this cross-cultural exploration all the more intriguing, and pleasurable. She serves up Brazilian gems in Portuguese (a sun-dappled “Samba Saravah” and buttery “Manha De Carnaval”) and English (the frisky “Telephone Song” and ebullient “So Nice”), augmented by French interpretations of “Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar” and “Você Abusou” and a bilingual (French/English) “A Felicidade.”
Additionally, she unfurls an exquisite “And I Love Her,” soft as a moonbeam, and, with Thompson’s assistance, makes an impressive songwriting debut with the gently swaying “Is It Really You?”

Acclaim
Diana's release, to Brazil with love (2011), is a tribute to the samba and bossa nova traditions of Brazil. The album features the most adventurous instrumentation to date. Maninho Costa and Silas Silva add Brazilian rhythms on drums and percussion, while Kiki Misumi on cello and Bill McBirnie on flute add colour and texture. Don and Reg are still the mainstay of the trio and provide delightful accompaniment and soloing throughout. The album appeared on a number of Best of 2011 lists, including those of Japan's Jazz Critique Magazine, Tim Perlich, JAZZ.FM's hosts Jaymz Bee and John Devenish. The album also ranked #1 for eight weeks on the jazz sales chart in Greater China and Singapore. All three of Diana's most recent albums appeared simultaneously on the Top Ten jazz sales chart for 12 weeks in Taiwan and Hong Kong. The album was nominated for a JUNO, a Canadian Independent Music Award and an American Independent Music Award.
If the expression "the art of interpretation" has ever applied, then it does here. Expressiveness, paired with a voice that is trained in top notch jazz techniques, gives us a vocalist that ranks among the greatest young chanteuses of our time.

Biography：
Kelly Andrew is an accomplished musical artist, composer, pianist, producer, and sound engineer with an emphasis in melodic, lyrical, and emotional Contemporary Instrumental and Orchestral music.
From an early age, Kelly always had passion for the arts. He started drawing at the age of 4 having drawn thousands of pencil/pen sketches accumulated over the years including glazed artwork, sculptures, origami, oil painting, and watercolor. At one point, he wanted to become the next Picasso or Salvador Dali, however, at around the same time, he had a strong interest in music. For hours he would listen to New Age, Electronic, Dance, Contemporary Instrumental, Pop, Piano, Orchestral, and Video Game music either on the radio or on CD and cassette tapes while drawing, working on homework, doing recreation, and sleeping.
It wasn’t long before Kelly decided to try composing music himself. Starting out with a cheap Yamaha PSR model keyboard, at the age of 11, he wrote his first composition. Since that time, he has written hundreds of songs and sketches, including eight singles, an EP, and four albums in the Contemporary Instrumental, Orchestral, World and Uplifting Trance genres. His Orchestral/Instrumental music has been very well received by the industry including the support of many internet (Sky.fm, Pandora Radio, Music Choice, etc.), local, national, and international radio stations, nominations by Independent Music Awards and Hollywood Music in Media Awards, numerous Top 10 charts on ZoneMusicReporter.com, and numerous positive reviews including well-established reviewers in New Age, NewAgeMusicWorld.com/NewAgeMusic.nu, MainlyPiano.com, and reviewsnewage.com. He recently participated in the Chopin International Piano competition and learned a wide repertoire of music, including his own compositions and works from Debussy, Chopin, Mozart, and Beethoven to name a few.
Kelly is currently building repertoire on piano and writing music for TV/Film, Video Games, Trailers, and Music Libraries with several publishing deals over the years. In addition, he also plays in a church band, at local restaurants, at events/festivals, and at farmer’s markets around Florida playing cover music, original compositions, and unreleased material. His plans are to release another album in 2015 and to be more active on YouTube with all new videos featuring himself on the piano playing both new and cover songs.

多年前，我生平第一次进行CD大清仓，差点卖掉爵士女歌手海伦‧梅芮尔的作品。回想起来，与其说不喜欢，还不如说当时的我，根本完全不瞭解她。
梅芮尔的成名过程不但缓慢，而且十分特殊。一般来说，知名的爵士女歌手几乎都曾在大厂牌发行专辑，这有几个好处，一是行销预算多，可以为歌手大力宣传；二是铺货广，大小城市都买得到专辑。除此之外，大厂牌也更热衷於「回收」艺人的价值，只要是大受欢迎的专辑，就可以一而再，再而三地重发复刻盘，甚至制作精美的套装大合集，以吸引新一代的乐迷。
但是，长得非常漂亮，又擅长歌唱的梅芮尔除了出道之始在Mercury的子厂牌EmArcy发行唱片外，并不曾为任何大厂牌录音。即使曾经与北美最大的独立厂牌大西洋唱片公司（Atlantic Records）签约，梅芮尔也只录制了一张唱片，在这之后，梅芮尔便瀟洒远走他乡，将近二十年的光阴，不再活跃於美国歌坛。最令人讶异的是，即使是在广受爵士乐迷喜爱的经典厂牌发行专辑，且获得相当好的评价，梅芮尔仍有若干作品从来没有发行过CD版。如此才貌兼具的女性，却被主流市场忽略，因而受到乐迷的冷落，似乎也就无可避免了。
事实上，从下定决心走上职业歌唱生涯那一天，这位择善固执的女性就不向商业妥协。虽然她曾自嘲，自己刻意远离流行市场之举「实在很傻」，让她少赚了很多钱，但也正因如此，她的执著与才情，方得以在多年后，被真正喜爱爵士乐的歌迷深深的珍惜著。她那纤细、略带阴鬱感的演唱，全然融入乐器演奏的嗓音，如此深邃迷离，总是令人著迷不已。
海伦‧梅芮尔出生於纽约曼哈顿岛。出於学区考量，当船长的父亲在梅芮尔年幼时，举家迁至布朗区（Bronx），这对梅芮尔日后选择演唱生涯有重大影响。梅芮尔的父母是克罗埃西亚（前南斯拉夫）移民，全家都热爱音乐，母亲不但擅长演唱南欧民谣，也非常喜欢美国知名作曲家如Jerome Kern的作品，家里常播放七十八转唱片的流行歌曲。梅芮尔的姊姊是爵士大乐团的粉丝，家里的广播电台永远都固定在播放爵士乐的频道上。
大乐团爵士在当时是最受欢迎的跳舞音乐，所有的年轻乐迷喜爱的都是震天价响的节拍，以及热烈夸饰的合奏，梅芮尔则不同。从未正式受过正统音乐训练的她，对於艺人的即兴独奏旋律特别有兴趣。她仔细聆听Billie Holiday演唱的细节，对於Lester Young、Ben Webster这些乐手出神入化的萨克斯风演奏讚嘆不已。这或许说明了为何日后当梅芮尔演唱时，特别重视个别乐手的即兴演奏，而非把他们当成绿叶配红花的陪衬品。
由於居住在布朗区，又是二次战后新兴的咆勃乐迷，念中学的梅芮尔下课后总是跑到附近的845俱乐部听下午场的演出，知名乐手如Charlie Parker、Miles Davis都曾在此演出。对梅芮尔而言，845俱乐部特别值得纪念，它不但是梅芮尔初登场的演唱地，也因为演奏好手如云，提供了爵士歌手从基础磨练的绝佳机会。
梅芮尔出道时，第一个为她伴奏的钢琴手是Bud Powell。加入钢琴手Earl Hines领军的六重奏时，她也因为与Charlie Parker在同一俱乐部演出，曾被这位伟大的被咆勃乐旗手点名，一起演出了「I Cover the Waterfront」与「Lover Man」等曲。Bud Powell、Charlie Parker都是具有高度原创性的乐手，并不以为歌手伴奏知名。然而，对他们来说，梅芮尔并不是普通的歌手，她从来都不是为了取悦、逢迎流行市场而唱歌。谈及合作乐手时，梅芮尔常以「sing against」某人的演奏来表达演唱的情形。对乐手而言，梅芮尔是「乐手选择的歌手」（musicians’ choice of singer），与她一起演出，爵士乐手不会退居二线「烘托」歌手，而是一起「合奏」甚至「对抗」的伙伴。
这就是为什么曾经与梅芮尔合作演出的乐手，都不是籍籍无名的平庸之辈，而是出类拔萃的音乐人。以钢琴手为例，就包括了美国的Earl Hines、Bill Evans、Teddy Wilson、英国的Dudley Moore（喜剧谐星杜利‧摩尔）、Gordon Beck、义大利的Romano Mussolini（独裁者墨索里尼之子）、日本的佐藤允彦（梅芮尔称他为「天才」）…等人。从来没有受过任何音乐训练，完全不识谱的梅芮尔，对於爵士乐演奏却有超乎常人的风格辨识力，以及过「耳」不忘的记忆。曾经有一回，梅芮尔在日本的爵士咖啡厅里接受访问，同行的人没有人知道当晚的演奏者姓名，但她却一听就知道是谁，让现场担任採访的记者佩服不已。根据一九六三年四月号发行的日本爵士乐月刊Swing Journal，斟酌当时的访谈纪录，梅芮尔简直就是个「演奏者」（player）。这样的描述相当精确地说明她与一般歌手的不同之处。
接下来介绍几张梅芮尔的作品。
Helen Merrill ( EmArcy 1954)
从一九五四年开始，梅芮尔在Bob Shad领军的EmArcy厂牌录制专辑，一直到五八年二月为止，四年总共发表了五张专辑：Helen Merrill （小号手Clifford Brown担任伴奏）、Helen Merrill with Strings、Dream of You、Merrill at Midnight、以及The Nearness of You。虽然十吋盘的录音算不上是顶尖，但Helen Merrill首刻盘极具魅力，它是二手黑胶市场上的热门商品，尤其受到日本买家的青睞。
对当时担任EmArcy音乐总监的Bob Shad而言，初试啼声的梅芮尔不过就是个菜鸟，让她与小号手Clifford Brown合作，纯粹是无心插柳的安排。没想到迸出了令人惊豔的火花；二十四岁的Clifford Brown，搭配二十三岁的Merrill，由二十一岁的Quincy Jones负责制作与编曲，竟然联手打造出足以流传后世的经典专辑，选择的曲目不但优异，歌声也极为出色，更不用说乐手杰出的演奏表现了！
原始发行的唱片是十吋盘规格，一共收录了七首曲子，几乎都是名家所作的抒情曲，也就是俗称的ballads。录音分两次进行，阵容虽然稍有不同，不过核心人物Clifford Brown与钢琴手Jimmy Jones均有参与。专辑以Billie Holiday唱红的「Don’t Explain」开场，一开始是吉他手Barry Galbraith与Jimmy Jones稀疏简约的旋律伴奏，带出梅芮尔阴鬱的演唱。可能是因为唱歌时很靠近麦克风的缘故，梅芮尔演唱慢歌时，略带沙哑的歌喉蕴藏著丰富的情感细节，听来深刻、哀伤而优美。
名家Cole Porter所作的「You’d Be So Nice to Come Home to」是整张专辑中最膾炙人口的曲子。据说，一直到现在，在梅芮尔的音乐会里，只要乐团开始演奏这首曲子的前奏，观眾就会为之疯狂。最精彩的演奏片段自然是Clifford Brown的小号即兴，他那拳拳到肉，具穿透力的小号吹奏，令所有的听眾印象深刻。第四轨的「Falling in Love with Love」是一首轻快活泼的曲子，在这里我们可以听到低音贝斯手Oscar Pettiford的拨弦演奏，灵巧而深具摇摆感，Jimmy Jones如银铃般响脆的钢琴演奏接续於后，接下来是Clifford Brown音色温醇的小号旋律，迎接著梅芮尔情绪高亢的演唱，是一首编曲风格十分明快的作品。
Helen Merrill录音完成两年后，Clifford Brown因为车祸早逝，爵士乐坛痛失一名英才，实在非常可惜。Clifford Brown最好的作品都是在EmArcy厂牌发行。对爵士歌唱特别有兴趣的乐迷，除了Helen Merrill之外，Clifford Brown也曾为Sarah Vaughan的Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown、Dinah Washington的Dinah Jams等专辑录音跨刀，表现都十分精彩，有兴趣者不妨找来听听看。
Dream of You (EmArcy 1956)
一九五六年开始，由於大唱片公司积极拓展市场，十二吋规格的黑胶唱片越来越普及，梅芮尔也面临是否应该转型为流行歌手的难题。在这之前，她已经顺应Bob Shad的要求，录制了一张由Dick Heyman指挥的弦乐伴奏的专辑Helen Merrill with Strings，这并不是一张纯爵士的专辑。Bob Shad虽然是精纯咆勃乐的粉丝，但碍於销售考量，不得不向市场低头。
梅芮尔想出了一个主意，她不反对继续录制大乐团伴奏，灯光美、气氛佳的专辑。但考量自身唱歌的特色，梅芮尔希望是由一个有才气的音乐人来负责编曲。她向Bob Shad说项，提议找Gil Evans。Bob Shad当下立即的反应是：「No」!
为什么？虽然Gil Evans曾为酷派的开山祖师Claude Thornhill效力，也因此获得纽约乐坛同行的瞩目，但当时的他尚未打出知名度，也还没替Miles Davis在哥伦比亚唱片公司的名作编曲，说他是无名小卒也不为过。
但在梅芮尔不断地坚持下，Bob Shad终於屈服。Gil Evans素以高难度的繁复编曲驰名，这对乐手或歌手而言都是挑战，更何况是不识谱的梅芮尔。对她来说，录制Dream of You就像是「从悬崖上跳下来学飞行」，简直是不可能的任务。但也正因为是由Gil Evans操刀，拜其杰出的编曲之赐，Dream of You成为梅芮尔生涯代表作之一。
一如梅芮尔的演唱风格，Gil Evans的编曲带著暗鬱、冷静的色彩。在他的安排下，弦乐与管乐器合奏并不热闹，但声响细节极为丰富，有著一种注重空间的现代感，这跟传统的摇摆乐团外向、奔放的演奏风格完全不同。正因如此，梅芮尔才得以充分施展歌唱才能，她演唱的每一个音符，尤其是刻意拖曳的尾音，带著高涨、炽热而饱满的情感。在华丽但低调的伴奏中，无论是「He was Too Good to Me」或是「I’m A Fool to Want You」，梅芮尔都唱出了独树一帜的风格，这也是她在EmArcy演唱水平最成熟的一张专辑。特别值得一提的是，小号手Art Farmer在「By Myself」和长号手Jimmy Cleveland在「People Will Say We’re in Love」中的即兴表现均不俗。
The Nearness Of You (EmArcy 1958)
The Nearness of You的录音分为两次，第一次是在芝加哥，第二次於隔年在纽约完成录音工作，两次录音的伴奏班底完全不同，前者主要是由Dick Marx（钢琴）跟Mike Simpson（萨克斯风、长笛）等乐手为主力，后者则是跟Bobby Jasper（长笛）、Bill Evans（钢琴）、George Russell（吉他）、Oscar Pettiford（贝斯）、Jo Jones（鼓）等知名度更高的成员合作。以演奏实力来说，两组人马其实是不分轩輊的。
对乐迷而言，The Nearness of You专辑的演奏班底中，最有吸引力的是Bill Evans的参与。据说Bill Evans跟梅芮尔有情感关係，两人曾经交往过，Evans也会给她选曲上的建议。关於这一点，梅芮尔去年接受纽约记者Marc Myers访问时，倒是没有著墨太多，仅说Bill Evans是她的好朋友，两人常交换音乐上的一些意见。Bill Evans曾经为了是否加入Miles Davis乐团犹疑不决，最后在她的鼓励之下终於点头。在梅芮尔的口中，Bill Evans是一位「个性非常敏感」的知音。
虽然Bill Evans在参与录制The Nearness of You之前，已经在Miles Davis的乐团表演，但当时的他并不是一位特别有名的钢琴手。对Evans来说，录制这张专辑是得到更多瞩目的好机会。有意思的是，邀请Bill Evans、George Russell等人参与专辑录音，也是梅芮尔本人的主意。根据日本乐评人佐藤秀树的说法，吉他演奏者大多对於音乐理论方面有相当研究。梅芮尔在Helen Merrill中找Barry Galbraith，在The Nearness of You找George Russell来帮忙，借重这些吉他手在演奏和编曲方面的才能，为整体专辑加分。像这样伯乐识千里马，懂得找杰出人才进行合作的女歌手，在爵士乐史上还真的不多哩！
一开场的「Bye Bye Blackbird」是再熟悉不过的歌曲了。对爵士乐迷来说，比较有名的可能是Sarah Vaughan在日本现场演出的版本。梅芮尔在这里展现了迥异於Sarah Vaughan的演唱风格。整首曲子先是以Mike Simpson轻快的长笛旋律开场，接下来是梅芮尔成熟、世故的演唱，以沙哑的嗓音巧妙地予以詮释，是听起来非常舒适的歌曲。第三轨的「I Remember You」也有著类似的轻快风格，梅芮尔的歌喉亦是魅力十足。
第二轨的「When The Sun Comes Out」是一首慢板的抒情曲，也是由长笛旋律贯穿其中，不过演奏者换成了Bobby Jasper。梅芮尔本来就擅长掌握慢歌的詮释，无论是演唱表情，歌词掌握与旋律进行，都是恰如其分。第四轨的「Softly as in A Morning Sunrise」的唱法带著点戏剧成分，在贝斯拨弦声中，以平静、压抑的歌声开场，随著弹性节奏渐次加快脚步，长笛与钢琴的旋律加进来时，已经转换成轻快的旋律，最后仍回归慢板节奏，是很有意思的编曲。
梅芮尔似乎非常喜爱詮释Cole Porter的作品，第七轨的「All of You」即为一例。Bobby Jasper的长笛演奏呈现极为迷人的摇摆风情，Bill Evans的钢琴即兴接续於后，为梅芮尔后半段的演唱作了巧妙的铺陈。整张专辑的高潮是第十轨的「The Nearness of You」，这是名家Hoagy Carmichael填词，Ned Washington谱曲的抒情曲。Bill Evans以华丽的钢琴旋律开场，搭配梅芮尔贴近麦克风的演唱，让整首曲子瀰漫著一种浓郁深沈、氤氳迴盪的夜晚气息，搭配Bobby Jasper抢眼的长笛演奏，适切地表达了歌词中里的谈恋爱感觉。最后一轨的「Just Imagine」的风格与第四轨的「Softly as in A Morning Sunrise」类似，都是以弹性节奏为主，先慢后快的曲子，Bill Evans与Oscar Pettiford都有称职的表现。

虽然获得乐评人及乐手同行极佳的评价，梅芮尔在六○年代发行的许多专辑却是默默无闻。这可能有两个原因，一是六○年代的爵士女歌手面临更严峻的商业挑战，若不走节奏蓝调或流行音乐的演唱路线，几乎是无市场可言；二是梅芮尔当时先后客居罗马与东京，她在义大利与日本的知名度比本国还高，但这对於吸引本国唱片公司的注意并没有任何助益。
LP--Helen Merrill & Dick Katz《The Feeling is Mutual》‧Recorded at Plaza Sounds Studios, NYC, 1965‧收於Mosaic MCD-1019版Track01--09The Helen Merrill-Dick Katz Sessions是一个异数：它重发了梅芮尔两张由美国厂牌Milestone发行的作品：The Feeling Is Mutual和A Shade of Difference。这么重要的一位女歌手，於六○年代在美国深具影响力的爵士厂牌发行专辑，竟然要等到二○○八年才重发CD，真是令乐迷诧异不已。
The Feeling Is Mutual与A Shade of Difference都由钢琴手Dick Katz负责编曲与伴奏，这也是他生涯得意之作。Katz係科班训练出身，曾受教於merrill katz sessions钢琴名家Teddy Wilson，无论是演奏或编曲都十分出色。一九六六年，Dick Katz与Orrin Keepnews（Thelonious Monk与Bill Evans早期的制作人）携手合作，共同成立了爵士厂牌Milestone，特地邀请梅芮尔回国录制专辑。
这两张专辑的演奏阵容都很坚强：前者是Dick Katz（钢琴）、Jim Hall（吉他）、Ron Carter（贝斯）、Thad Jones（小号）、Pete La Roca或Arnie Wise（鼓）所组成的六重奏，后者则由Gary Bartz（萨克斯风）、Hubert Laws（长笛）、Richard Davis（长笛）、Elvin Jones（鼓）等人组成，吉他、小号与钢琴维持不变。
merrill katz sessions即使没有梅芮尔本人的参与，如此组合怎么看都是一流的主流爵士编制。与梅芮尔五○年代的作品比较，The Helen Merrill-Dick Katz Sessions有几个特色，一是经由Dick Katz的巧手编排，和声与旋律的演奏都更为进化，音乐所呈现的风格色彩繽纷。以第二轨的「It Don’t Mean A Thing」为例，这是一首艾灵顿公爵的摇摆名作，Dick Katz、Thad Jones、Jim Hall轮流即兴，搭配梅芮尔同等精彩的演唱，完全是为死忠爵士乐迷量身订作的作品。二是为了尊重个别乐手的即兴演奏，每首曲子的平均长度更长。三是梅芮尔大胆迎向自由爵士，在A Shade of Difference专辑中竟然挑战了Ornette Coleman的名作「Lonely Woman」，实在是太正点了！
除了重发The Helen Merrill-Dick Katz Sessions之外，马赛克唱片公司也发行了梅芮尔的另一张专辑Casa Forte。这张专辑是梅芮尔的第三任老公，钢琴手Torrie Zito负责编曲与制作，也是一张精彩的作品。
Helen Merrill & Gordon Beck: No Tears…No Goodbyes (Owl)
梅芮尔录制这张专辑时已经五十四岁。彼时的她，经历了两次失败的婚姻，客居义大利与日本将近二十年，无论是是歌喉或是心态，已经与年轻时的她大不相同。她的歌声不若早期的厚沈，但也没有年少时的阴鬱。历经沧桑的她，似乎见惯了大风大浪，有棱有角的个性被磨得平顺，同样反映在这张专辑的演唱风格之中。
八○年代时，梅芮尔曾与英国杰出的钢琴手Gordon Beck一起巡迴演出，来自美国的低音贝斯手Red Mitchell与小号手Tom Harrell也曾加入Beck的乐团，担任演奏工作。No Tears…No Goodbyes就是在这样的合作关係下诞生的。
No Tears…No Goodbyes在巴黎录音，由法国的猫头鹰厂牌（Owl Records）发行黑胶唱片，后来环球取得版权，重新发行了CD版。虽然「全音乐指南」只给了这张专辑三颗星，但在笔者的心目中，无论从哪一个角度来看，No Tears…No Goodbyes都是梅芮尔最出色的作品，说它是「人声-钢琴」二重奏中的铭心绝品，给五颗星也不为过。
钢琴手Gordon Beck的演奏在整张专辑的表现上，扮演了十分关键性的角色。Beck算得上是英国爵士界的重量级人物，年轻时出於对音乐的热爱，放弃了工程师的工作，加入了次中音萨克斯风手Tubby Hayes的乐团，后来也曾担任伦敦顶尖的爵士俱乐部Ronnie Scott的常驻钢琴手。六○年代末至七○年代初，Gordon Beck加入了美国中音萨克斯风手Phil Woods领军的「欧洲节奏机器」（European Rhythm Machine）乐团，录制了许多经典作品。在这之后，Gordon Beck组成自己的乐团，正式单飞，并常以钢琴三重奏形式巡迴演出。
在No Tears…No Goodbyes中，Gordon Beck扮演的并不是单纯的伴奏角色。作为欧洲最杰出的即兴钢琴手，Beck不但擅长情境铺陈，他那充满自信的和声与即兴旋律，为梅芮尔世故圆融的嗓音穿针引线，交织成片片陶醉的音乐风景，令人「耳」不暇接。以第一轨「No Tears…No Goodbyes」为例，一开头的几个轻柔的电子键盘音符，搭配梅芮尔的轻声歌唱，带出了迷濛雨夜的都会风情。Gordon Beck的即兴演奏固然慧黠锐利，但绝不会盖过梅芮尔的风采。或许为了纪念录音地点，第二轨「I Love Paris」係Cole Porter名作，以梅芮尔的清唱开场，Beck在中间加入，以极简形式伴奏。第三轨「I Love Paris Too」係Gordon Beck的钢琴独奏，巧妙地呼应梅芮尔的歌唱，是一首极为优美的即兴小品。第五轨的「Bye Bye Blackbird」係旧曲重唱，相较於她在The Nearness of You中比较厚重的嗓音，No Tears…No Goodbyes中的版本显得较为轻鬆、逍遥，而没有太多情感包袱，梅芮尔演唱风格的转换，由此可见一斑。
除了No Tears…No Goodbyes之外，梅芮尔与Gordon Beck也在猫头鹰厂牌合作了另一张专辑Music Makers，萨克斯风手Steve Lacy与小提琴手Stephane Grappelli均有参与，同样值得一听。
咆勃乐时代窜起的知名女歌手如Ella Fitzgerald、Sarah Vaughan早已於一、二十年先后凋零，即使是音乐走向与制作风格比较相像的Anita O’Day，也於三年前离开人间。今年已届七十九岁高龄的梅芮尔，依然活跃於爵士歌坛，如同孤高独行的夜鶯，栖息在都市丛林的枝头，以魅力满分的氤氳嗓音，诉说著恋爱的甜蜜与情伤的悲痛，如此，楚楚动人。

Chet Baker's West Coast cool comes to the Big Apple on Chet Baker in New York. The project would be Baker's first -- in a four album deal -- with the Big Apple-based Riverside Records. The bicoastal artist incorporates his decidedly undernourished sound and laid-back phrasing into the styling of Al Haig (piano), Johnny Griffin (tenor sax), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums). The results are uniformly brilliant as Baker's cool-toned solos fly and bop with authority around the equally impressive supporting soloists. Conversely, the same cohesive unity continues on the introspective numbers that are more akin to Baker's California cool. Undoubtedly one of the charms of this collection is the distinct choice of material. Running the gamut from the relaxed and soothing "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" and equally serene "Blue Thoughts" at one end of the spectrum to the percolating and driving intensity of "Hotel 49" on the other. This track features each quintet member taking extended solos corralling together at the head and again at the coda for some intense bop interaction. Especially ferocious is Philly Joe Jones, who could easily be mistaken for Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, or even Gene Krupa with his cacophonous solo that never strays from the beat or loses its sense of swing. Perhaps the best meshing of styles can be heard on the Miles Davis composition "Solar." This "best-of" candidate refers to both Chambers' and Jones' concurrent involvement with Davis. The churning backbeat likewise propels the melody and ultimately the performers into reaching beyond their individual expertise and into an area of mutual brilliance. Chet Baker in New York is a highly recommended entry into Baker's catalog. It should also be noted that these same sides were issued in 1967 as Polka Dots and Moonbeams on the Jazzland label.

Finding Meaning in a Trumpeter’s Jagged Life and Death
‘‘He was one of the first generation of masters who created the powerful American urban music that came to be called bebop. He was the last of them to remain faithful to heroin, long after the others had cleaned up or died young. It was a love affair more than a habit.’’
He was Chet Baker, the junkie trumpeter, a legend of sordidness and stone brilliance, who fell to his death at age 58 out the window of room 210 at the Hotel Prins Hendrik in Amsterdam, near the drug-dealing area on Zeedijk. The fall was seemingly drug-induced and probably came as he nodded off while sitting on a windowsill. It was three in the morning on May 13, 1988.

Of Chet, who lived in Europe for most of the ’80s, becoming a romanticized, broken-virtuoso commodity for Continental club owners and record producers, Mike reported:
‘‘The creases on his face had multiplied and deepened and his lips turned in over the dentures he had worn since his teeth were knocked out by angry dealers in San Francisco. He began to resemble an old Indian, the last of a tribe that had seen a lot of suffering.’’
Mike also pointed to a fierce irony: The mythic junkie had become an immense musician. After he embarrassingly won best-trumpeter polls as a ‘‘great white hope’’ in the 1950s in America, Mike insisted that Chet ‘‘on a good night in the middle 1980s was capable of playing jazz as well as it can be played, yet was dismissed as a has-been.’’
On his newspaper’s good days in the ’80s and ’90s, Mike Zwerin represented a big piece of its elegant, Paris-based eclecticism. Looking back to the sixties, Volker Schlöndorff, the Oscar-winning film director, said there were moments ‘‘when nothing could be more sexy than to be seen with a copy of the Herald Tribune sticking out of your coat pocket.’’
The IHT had people who wrote about jazz, fashion, the art markets and eurobonds, but no White House correspondent, or anyone on the front lines in the Balkans — the news turbines of its publishers since 1967, The New York Times and The Washington Post, did those jobs masterfully for the Trib.
Rather, the IHTs editorial page editor, Robert Donohue, wrote about rugby’s Five Nations Tournament, and Sam Abt, the paper’s deputy editor, filled columns for years with insights into cycling and the Tour de France.
The IHT tried to pick its spots carefully.
Tom Buerkle, writing from Brussels, enraged European Union bureaucrats by showing how the bloc’s own statistical service demonstrated that Germany and France had areas of poverty greater than corresponding ones in the United States.
And when the European Union seriously considered taking Turkey in as a member, the newspaper sent Tom Fuller to Turkey’s borders with Iran, Iraq and Syria to report strikingly on how real life appeared at what were projected to become Europe’s frontiers.
For the record, the day of Chet Baker’s death, Mike Zwerin complained like hell about having to stir himself and head for Amsterdam on a couple of hours notice. And in the middle of the afternoon! He was told that breathing the air of the canals would do him great good.
The piece he wrote, probably smoking and still cursing, remains fine reading.

今夜您失恋了吗？今夜您想念初恋情人吗？今夜您想一个人静静的听著雨声吗？来一张Helen Merrill的「Lilac Wine」吧！Lilac是紫丁香花，也可以说是淡紫红色的，Lilac Wine可以译成「淡紫红色的葡萄酒」，当然也可以译成「紫丁香花酒」。不过，从Lilac Wine这首曲子的歌词听来，此处是指用紫丁香花酿制的酒。其实，Lilac Wine是James Shelton在1950年所作的歌曲，多年来已经有不少人唱过，Helen Merrill算是晚近唱这首歌的人。
说到Helen Merrill这位克罗埃西亚裔的美国爵乐女歌手，无论是音响迷或爵乐迷手中应该多少都会有个几张她的唱片。如果您手上还没有，那么就从这张开始吧！她生於1930年7月21日，从14岁起就开始在爵士俱乐部打工唱歌，16岁乾脆就全心投入。1952年，她在Mercury唱片旗下的唱片公司推出第一张唱片，二年后的1954年，她推出第一张LP唱片，相信那是早期少数的LP唱片之一，当时那张唱片的制作人就是鼎鼎大名的Quincy Jones，当年他才21岁。而她的第二张LP唱片制作人也很有名，那就是Gil Evans。1960年代，她去了欧洲开展自己的歌唱事业，在义大利等地很受欢迎。1967年她去了日本，一直到1972年才回美国。在日本期间她也录了一些唱片，甚至还有用日文唱的，可见她对日本的喜爱。
回美国之后，Helen Merrill的演唱会、录制唱片工作一直没有停过，一直到2008年6月，她还在Mosaic唱片出版早期二张LP唱片的CD再制作发行「Helen Merrill Dick Katz Sessions」（MCD-1019）。明年2009年，她还安排好要去日本东京、名古屋与福冈开演唱会，其实她在2007年也在日本开了演唱会。从14岁开始唱歌一直到今天，Hellen Merrill还活跃在录制唱片与现场音乐会上，真是少见的爵乐长青女歌手。虽然她的「本业」是爵乐，但她也曾唱过Bossa Nova，那是跟渡边贞夫爵士五重奏团合录的「Bossa Nova in Tokyo」。
「紫丁香花酒」是2002年的录音，在2004年出版，如果前述那张老片重翻的「Helen Merrill Dick Katz Sessions」不算，这张「紫丁香花酒」是目前为止她最新的录音。录音时间分为二段，一段是2002年5月在捷克布拉格完成，另一段是2002年7月在美国纽约完成。混音则是在2002年8月在纽约完成。全片伴奏採用32人的古典乐团编制再加上爵士大乐队，算是大制作。
Helen Merrill的嗓音有多迷人呢？这么说好了，她的嗓音类似Shirley Horn（1934-2005），但又比Horn温柔些，浪漫些。听著Helen Merrill低沉懨懒又柔情万般的唱腔，任是再刚强的人也要化为绕指柔。值得一提的是这张专辑由她的编曲钢琴家老公Torrie Zito负责制作，Zito是很有名的编曲家与制作人，跟他合作过的大牌很多，包括芭芭拉史翠珊与法兰克辛纳屈等等。如果您有John Lennon那张「Imagine」，就会发现他的名字。此外，还找来著名的爵乐Bass手George Mraz跨刀助阵，这样的阵容想不做好这张CD也难。
这张CD的录音效果有多好呢？非常美的管弦乐，非常美的木管（尤其第八首），非常美的嗓音。假若您没有收藏这张CD，肯定是您的一大损失。如果买了这张CD而觉得录音效果不佳？那就是该检讨器材搭配与空间的时候了。
