She's famous for her chart-topping albums and her soaring choral voice, but Laura Wright is equally as sporty as she is musical. Speaking to Classic FM's Margherita Taylor, Laura revealed exactly how she balances strength and beauty in her life - showing off the hard work and physical capabilities of her body, alongside the delicate beauty of her singing voice.
"Beauty definitely is something about an inner confidence, an inner strength in fact," she said. "If you can instil that in young women at quite a young age then that's something incredibly important."
Her latest video, Barber's Adagio/The Sound of Strength, is a combination of these two concepts, demonstrating the beauty of strength and the strength of beauty, showing off the human body as a physical tool.
"There's no soft focus, it's all about the strength," she said. "It's all about how your body works as a muscle, but there's also a real beauty there, empowering the femininity as well."
Laura's dedication to her fitness and her singing career doesn't stop at the end of a busy day. While many might be tempted to indulge in a hot bath and a glass of wine, Laura prefers to wind down with some calming yoga.
As well as her new album coming out later in the year, Laura revealed her plans for the coming year. She revealed her plans to perform at the Invictus Games 2014, an international sporting competition for wounded, injured and sick service personnel.
"It's going to be a really special moment to have respect for the service men and women, for them to have their moment to shine," she said.

The 24-year-old singer, who studied at Framlingham College, has released a new video which she describes as her musical manifesto.
“It’s a statement of who I am and the sort of music I want to make,” she said.
“I wanted it to turn classical music on its head and create a new type of music.”

The video, shot in a south London car park, was released this week to accompany her recording of Samuel Barber’s Agnus Dei which forms part of her latest EP The Sound of Strength, which has been recorded as a tribute to the wonders of the human body.
Sport and fitness play a huge part in the former All Angels star’s life – she plays rugby as well as taking part in cross-fit training – and the recording of Barber’s classic work has been given a gritty ‘street’ feel to offer audiences a contemporary way into classical repertoire.
“It’s my way of saying that your body is an instrument. I look after my body as I look after my voice. It’s a way of inspiring people to enjoy exercise – to say you too can be a superhero. You can do amazing things.”
The racy video, shot in classy black and white, emphasising her toned physique, cuts between Laura exercising in a gym and performing in a shadow-filled urban space.
“I want to create as wide an audience for my music as possible. I believe that people love classical music already but they are not really aware of it.
“For me, that’s where rapport is so important. When I sing at the rugby internationals the crowd aren’t worried whether what I sing is classical repertoire or not.
“They are just concerned that it brings them together, it empowers them and gives them strength.
“That’s the sort of feel I want from my own music. I want to break down barriers.
“I don’t mind if they don’t see it as classical music but just as something that is incredibly exciting, that gives you that fire and makes you feel like you are invincible – the sort of feeling you get from sports training.
“It’s creating a new type of music. It’s not classical. It’s not pop. It a new music that offers you a sense of liberation – a sense of freedom and excitement.” She said that the look of the video came very much from herself and was conceived to be an important element of the song.
“The video was always going to be an important element of the track. I wanted the visuals to be as powerful as the audio and for me, as a performer, I find it important that the visuals enhance the music.
“I feel the music on this EP is incredibly empowering and I wanted to show that power and strength as well as the beauty that comes from classical music along with the strength, energy, grit and determination that comes from exercise and sport.
“For me there were so many similarities between the two that this video and audio work as one.
“It’s not pictures to illustrate a song; the audio and video are essential components of the same experience.”
She said that music was the soundtrack to our lives and she wanted to create relevant contemporary music that was a product of her classical training but also fitted into a 21st Century lifestyle.

Sonic Agenda Exclusive Interview: Ryan Farish
We recently introduced you to a preview of Ryan Farish’s latest album ‘Spectrum’ which was released back on June 30th. The album has already received great reviews from listeners far and wide. It is truly an amazing album from start to finish and any music fan can really find something they love it in. Ryan puts the most beautiful sounds together to create a long lasting memory. Ryan Farish was kind enough to take some time out his busy schedule and answer some questions for us.
Could you tell us a little bit about yourself, for fans in our area who may not know who you are?
I am a recording artist, composer and producer from Virginia.
Who are your top 3 influences and why? Can you give us a past and present Artist that have inspired you?
That’s a tough question, but if I have to pick just three, I would say… Above & Beyond, ATB, and Coldplay. They are my top picks because of how they communicate through their music. A past artist that has inspired me is Pat Metheny for his melodic and com-positional sensibility.
How has your year been in 2015, you just released Spectrum, has the success been what you thought it would be like?
It’s been a very busy year for me in the studio. It began with my single release “Distance” on Black Hole Recordings, and the whole process of writing and producing Spectrum, which is my largest album so far with 20 songs. With its first week of release, I was so excited that Spectrum charted on Billboard at #5, and was labeled the “Hot Shot Debut” on Billboard.com. We’ve had great support from producers like Aly & Fila, Sean Tyas, and Kevin Thomas so far… so it’s been really special for me to see my new music connecting with the industry in such a way.
Where did you draw inspiration from while producing Spectrum?
Everything really, Spectrum represents a period for me, where I pursued the best music, production, and sound quality I could achieve. I felt connected to the music while I was in the studio, and I spent a ridiculous amount of time on even just the mixes alone. I’m really happy with how it all came together, and I’m just thrilled that it has been embraced by my fans in the way that it has so far.
What are your thoughts on the current state of dance music in America as well as how the underground scene seems to be taking off? Do you feel that underground music has surpassed the ‘UNDERGROUND’ label in 2015?
Hmmm… that’s another tough question, from my perspective of one, I think that dance music in America has become so commercial. So I guess my answer is Yes, sometimes now the music is so commercial that it isn’t underground, which isn’t a bad thing, it’s just what it has grown to be. But in the end, I think I can speak for most of us, that we make music to share with the world, so when it takes off and grows bigger than the initial “scene”… that’s great, because it means that our music is connecting with more people than we could have imagined.
If you had to describe your music to a new listener what would you say?
Music… that hopefully lifts your heart, and gives you a better sense of who you are… music that hopefully comforts you and helps you express the things and feelings that sometimes are hard to express with words.
Any plans for the future, gigs or Festivals you’re looking forward too?
I’d love to. I recently started working with a booking agent in the Netherlands so hopefully that will lead to something new and exciting.
Have you heard or seen BT’s Electronic Opus, what do you think of his approach and is that something you could see yourself getting involved with in the future?
Yes, I’d love to do something acoustic like that in the future. I also went to Above & Beyond’s Acoustic show at the Greek Theatre in Hollywood. That was truly a magical experience, and I could see my music represented in more of a band like that vs. an orchestra situation.
If you could work or collaborate with one electronic artist who would it be? Also one artist outside of the electronic seen?
That’s another tough question… it would be nice to work with BT, as he’s been one of my earliest influences. Outside of Electronic music, Chris Martin would be my top dream collaborations.
If you weren’t DJing/Producing music, where and what do you think you would be doing with your life?
I’d probably be working as an artist manager, because I really am drawn to artistic people. The idea of helping the world connect through sound is really something that gets me up in the morning. Music can be powerful, it can take us places nothing else can, and it can lead us to experiences that bring us together in ways like nothing else.

Ryan Farish is an American Electronic Artist, Producer, Grammy nominated songwriter, and DJ. Ryan Farish first launched his music career, on the first generation MP3.com (2000). It was at this site where he received more than 1.8 million downloads, of his Electronic music, and then earned the title "Download King" from L.A.-based music industry magazine, Music Connection. In 2008, he garnered a Grammy nomination, as well as a Dove Award as a hit songwriter. Farish's music has been featured on every major television network, Major motion picture houses, and even recently branded one of the world’s most established and elegant brands, Audi in the Remarkable Audi series, a video series which Farish also stars in as well as a video with Bang & Olufsen featured in B+O stores worldwide. Companies like The Weather Channel, Audi, Bang & Olufsen (Denmark), Chevrolet (Israel), Rak Bank (Dubai) and Sony pictures have all used Farish’s trademark sound, to reach their markets.

As of January 2013, it has received more than 31 million views. Palmer and Farish gained renown from the prominence of the video; the former was interviewed on news networks including CNN.
Another popular and best-selling song of Ryan’s, is "Full Sail" from his Beautiful album. It has garnered more than 20 million YouTube views in a single video titled "THE MOST RELAXING MUSIC IMAGINABLE" which serves as an anchor in Ryan's expansive catalogue of music.

For his new album, Canadian flamenco guitar virtuoso Jesse Cook wanted to reflect on the different places and cultures he’s experienced as a musician. The result is One World, available April 28 and streaming above for one week.
“Over the years, I’ve taken my music and tried to cross-pollinate it with music from different parts of the world,” the Juno-Award-winning musician says in a press note to accompany the album. “For the (2003) album Nomad, I went to Cairo and recorded with musicians there. On my (2009) record The Rumba Foundation, I went to Colombia, and worked with musicians from Cuba as well. On (1998’s) Vertigo, I went down to Lafayette, La., and recorded with Buckwheat Zydeco. For me, the question has always been: Where did you go? Where did you take your guitar?”
That reflection, however, brought him to a new conclusion: that “it’s not really about going someplace.” Hence One World, Cook’s most diverse album to date that explores the idea that everything is connected. It’s why sitars blend with synths, electronic and acoustic textures become one, all while Cook’s guitar anchors it at the centre.
“The Constantinople of sound,” he says, making comparisons to the ancient city where Eastern and Western culture famously meet. For a musician whose built a career off travelling the globe and soaking in the sounds and cultures, it seems like the most logical place to end up.

Biography
Canadian rumba flamenco artist Jesse Cook has blended the exotic Spanish music form with elements of new age, jazz, and easy listening on his releases for Narada Records. Signed to the label in 1994, he produced his debut, Tempest, one year later. Gravity, released in 1996, hit the Top Ten on the new age charts. Vertigo was released two years later, and Free Fall appeared in mid-2000. In 2003 Nomad came out, followed by the live album Montréal in 2004. Though it was started conceptually in 2005, Cook didn't issue his next studio album, Frontiers, which marked a return to his initial simpler production style, until 2007. The Rumba Foundation followed in 2009. Cook varied the routine a bit with his next release, 2012's The Blue Guitar Sessions, adding ballads and vocals on some tracks (by singer Emma-Lee) for a more expansive and jazzy mid-stream pop sound. The guest artist-studded and aptly-named One World, which drew inspiration from music of the Middle East, South America, Spain, and beyond, was issued in May, 2015.

Only in her mid-twenties, Toronto-based singer Emilie-Claire Barlow is already a veteran of Canadian radio and TV, having started singing commercials at the age of seven. For this, her third album, she is accompanied by the eight-piece (plus guests) Barlow Group, which includes premiere Canadian trumpet player Guido Basso, with her father, Brian Barlow, on drums. The play list is an amalgam of tunes representing different genres and styles, including straight-out ballads and swing tunes, several Brazilian pieces, vocalese, and advanced jazz. The latter is represented by Chick Corea's "Spain," which Barlow does entirely in the wordless vocalizing fashion in front of excellent electric piano by Tom Szczesniak. The vocalese comes with the Annie Ross special "Twisted," which is not an easy song to sing if for no other reason than the need for the singer not to run out of breath midway through. Barlow makes it quite nicely. With his muted trumpet solo, Basso elevates the track to one of the best on the album. Highlighting the variety of the play list, Barlow pays tribute to Brazilian singer Rosa Passos with "De Flor em Flor" (From Flower to Flower), sung in Portuguese. Rounding out the session are two medleys devoted to melodies by Billy Strayhorn and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Barlow addresses this eclectic program with the assurance of the veteran performer she is. Her expressive vocals reflect her ample poise, confidence, and maturity. She takes her clear, light voice to higher ranges without sounding strained or shrill, as she displays on "La Belle Dame Sans Regret." Szczesniak replicates the solo of the late Kenny Kirkland, which was on the original recording of this tune. There is something for all vocal jazz enthusiasts on this excellent third trip to the studio by Barlow.

Canada has always been a mother lode for talented jazz artists. This time it's young Emilie-Claire Barlow with her first album. She's backed by the Barlow Group which has been together since 1999, supplemented on some tracks by two of Canada's veteran jazz musicians, Moe Koffman and Guido Basso. While this is a tribute album as the title indicates, the honors are spread among individuals who have made a variety of contributions to the art of music, singers and non-singers alike. This makes for an eclectic play list offering swing, Brazilian and ballads all of which Barlow and the group handle with class and aplomb.
Barlow is a true jazz singer. Not limiting herself to stating the lyrics, she works hard to have her voice be part of the ensemble. The full flavor of her vocal endeavors is heard on such tunes as a wildly swinging "Air Mail Special" (quoting from tunes associated with Ella Fitzgerald) and the Annie Ross/Wardell Gray vocalese anthem, "Twisted". The result is an exciting and dazzling presentation. Barlow sets aside scat for a sweet rather than dissolute rendition of "Lush Life". This is part of a Strayhorn medley that is highlighted by trumpet and trombone solos on "Chelsea Bridge" by Messrs. Basso and Russ Little, respectively. The medley also showcases the recently departed Moe Koffman's alto on "Take the "A" Train" with Barlow chipping in with some more Ella Fitzgerald like scatting.
Barlow has all the equipment for a fine career as a singer. She has a good feel for what she sings, effective wordless vocalizing technique, which she shouldn't let dominate her presentation, and good taste in what she selects to sing. Bryan relesaed the track “Huntin’, Fishin’ and Lovin’ Every Day” as next countdown single on iTunes on July 31st. The album’s title track “Kill the Lights” was released on digital retailers on August 4th.

Over the years the Gipsy Kings - which hail from the gypsy community in Arles and Montpelier in the south of France - has included singers and guitarists from the Reyes (Canut, Nicolas, Pablo and Patchai) and Baliardo families (Diego, Paco and Tonino). Lead singer Nicolas Reyes is the son of famed Flamenco singer José Reyes, who, with Manitas de Plata, sold millions of records in the 60's and 70's. The vigorous strumming of multiple acoustic guitars and the passionate vocals of the Gipsy Kings have best been defined by critics and fans as an exotic musical hybrid, "rumba flamenca".
There are no other examples of a non-English-speaking band (the group speaks in the Gypsy dialect of Gitane) with such a consistent winning streak in the US, where the group is the biggest-selling French act ever. Ever since the 1987 release of the blockbuster single "Bamboleo," from their platinum-plus debut album, the Gipsy Kings have dominated the World Music charts and sold more than 13 million albums worldwide - more than 3 million in the United States alone. The band captured the #1 spot on Billboard's World Music album chart with the gold certified "BEST OF GIPSY KINGS," which remained on the chart for more than a year.
Albums including the gold-certified "MOSAIQUE," "ALLEGRIA", "ESTE MUNDO", "GIPSY KINGS LIVE", "LOVE & LIBERTÉ," and "TIERRA GITANA" have provided a steady fuel of hits to Billboard's World Music, Latin, and Billboard Top 200 charts. For several years running, the Gipsy Kings have been consistently voted Billboard's #1 World Music Artist and #1 Latin Pop Artist in the magazine's year-end awards. In addition, their song "Sin Ella" from 1991's Este Mundo was chosen by Peter Weir for the soundtrack to his 1993 film, "Fearless."
Gipsy Kings is a French group of Spanish-language musicians from Arles and Montpellier, France. Although group members were born in France, their parents were mostly gitanos, Spanish Romani people who fled Catalonia during the 1930s Spanish Civil War, with the exception of Chico Bouchikhi who is of Moroccan and Algerian descent. They are known for bringing Rumba Catalana, a pop-oriented music distantly derived from traditional flamenco music, to worldwide audiences. Their music has a particular Rumba Flamenca style, with pop influences; many songs of the Gipsy Kings fit social dances, such as Salsa and Rumba. Their music has been described as a place where "Spanish flamenco and Romani rhapsody meet salsa funk".
Gipsy Kings are members of two related families: the Reyes and the Baliardos (Reyes means Kings in Spanish). They are cousins of the flamenco great Manitas de Plata whose granddaughter lead guitarist Tonino Baliardo married. Nicolas, Canut, Paul, Andre and Patchai Reyes are sons of flamenco singer Jose Reyes. The Gipsy Kings are:

这几天把Gipsy Kings的歌挖出来听，会突然想到要听他们的歌，
应该是因为听了Armik的专辑「Cafe Romantico」。
Armik热情又浪漫的吉他，让人不禁放鬆心情，彷彿置身於悠閒的午后，
一边享受徐徐微风，一边品嚐醇浓咖啡，虽然我不喜欢喝咖啡...

大概是歌曲风格相似，让我想起了Gipsy Kings。
每次听Gipsy Kings都觉得很感动，有一股热情洋溢的气息散发出来，
浓浓的拉丁风情，在这个亟需热度季节里，还满适合的。
其实我也没有很积极的在追这个团的作品，对他们的经历也不太瞭解，只知道是个标準的家族乐团，
而且每个成员年纪都很大（我老是喜欢中年男子...）。但是就是因为年纪大吧，
再加上团员们四处奔波，他们的作品，总有一种热情中带 有沧桑的感觉。
主唱的歌声，沙哑但浑厚，因此詮释情歌来相当入味。

第一次听到Un amor这首歌，是在「音乐咖啡地图 马德里到里斯本」专辑，
一听之后就爱上了，虽然Gipsy Kings的代表作另有别首，但我还是独钟此曲。

This album is another welcome entry in the reissues of the Chicago-based Vee-Jay jazz albums recorded during the 1950s and 1960s. One of the Two-in-One series (which takes two sessions originally issued on separate LPs and puts them on a single CD), there's a serious amount of music provided -- in this case, over 76 minutes.
The first set comes from a straight-ahead 1960 session lead by pianist Eddie Higgins, with Chicago-based trumpet player Paul Serrano and Count Basie tenor man Frank Foster joining in on three of the album's seven cuts. The Higgins-composed "Zarac, the Evil One" is the source of one of the album's more attractive tracks. Starting off with Serrano and Foster playing in unison, with Higgins' piano comping behind them and seguing into a Higgins' boppish solo. Higgins' deftness on the piano is heard best on "Falling in Love with Love" and "AB's Blues," where he and the rhythm section, which keeps things moving along throughout the album, go all out to give a bouncy, buoyant rendition of these tunes.
The Benny Green half of the CD was initially issued in 1958 under the title The Swingin'est and was the first jazz album issued by Vee-Jay. It's a much more interesting session than the Higgins' set. Featuring such young lions of the 1950s bop scene as Green, Nat Adderley, and Gene Ammons -- who are joined by Count Basie players Frank Wess and, once again, Frank Foster -- the session is also graced by the inimitable piano player from Detroit, Tommy Flanagan, with Al "Tootie" Heath anchoring the rhythm section. This is one of those blowing sessions that replaced the older jam sessions during the 1950s and 1960s. And blow these players did on such barn burners as "Jugging Around." On this piece, Adderley's trumpet is sassy, while Heath's drums lay out a breathtaking beat. There's excellent ensemble work on Foster's "Going South." Saving the best for last, "Swingin' for Benny" kicks off with a blistering Flanagan solo with the ensemble following in behind and then everyone taking off with extended solo relentlessly urged on by Heath's drums. This latter piece was originally issued on an LP called Juggin' Around. This album has fine music played by young, vigorous musicians, most of whom became jazz giants.

The New York Trio has produced a series of enjoyable session for Venus since the beginning of the 21st century. Consisting of pianist Bill Charlap, bassist Jay Leonhart and drummer Bill Stewart, their fifth CD together is similar to earlier efforts, concentrating on accessible treatments of selections from the Great American Songbook. The opening track, "Lover, Come Back to Me," is a swinging affair, with lots of amusing quotes inserted into the mix. "Stairway to the Stars" is suitably a dreamy interpretation, full of romance and gorgeous voicings by Charlap. The bittersweet ballad "I'll Be Seeing You" (forever associated with World War II films where the soldier leaves his love) is a solo feature for Charlap, played with tenderness. "Body and Soul" is one of the most recorded songs in jazz history, but the trio's rendition is worthwhile, even if little new ground is broken. This well-played collection of timeless ballads is perfect for unwinding at the end of the day.

David Hazeltine evidently salutes pianist Bill Evans on this Venus CD, as eight of the nine songs were recorded by Evans for Riverside and the late pianist's influence is definitely a part of Hazeltine's style (though the Japanese liner notes make it difficult to confirm for sure). Accompanied by two sympathetic musicians, bassist George Mraz and drummer Billy Drummond, Hazeltine's interpretations of standards like "Beautiful Love," "Alice in Wonderland" and "When You Wish Upon a Star" are lyrical and to the point. The lively setting of "How Deep Is the Ocean" and loping treatment of "Tenderly" also merit praise. Hazeltine's sole composition is "For Bill," a fluid piece that is also reminiscent of Bill Evans' approach to the piano and writing. Beautifully recorded, the only problem with this CD is Jan Saudek's tasteless cover photo.
